We've all dealt with them... some of us may even have been one in the past. But today as a parent I am about as upset as can be and I just need to vent somewhere... anywhere.
My daughter is 13... she is one of the kindest kids you'd meet. She's on the honor roll.... plays violin in orchestra... keeps all kinds of friends (nerds, jocks, other races)... she is the best BIG little sister her autistic older sister could ever have... and her name is Isis.
Isis... named for the Egyptian goddess.
The goddess Isis was worshipped as the ideal mother and wife as well as the patroness of nature and magic. She was the friend of slaves, sinners, artisans and the downtrodden, but she also listened to the prayers of the wealthy, maidens, aristocrats and rulers. Isis is often depicted as the mother of Horus, the falcon-headed deity associated with king and kingship (although in some traditions Horus's mother was Hathor). Isis is also known as protector of the dead and goddess of children.
Sadly as you all know the name has an ugly current meaning and also sadly teenagers can be cruel even without any ammunition to fire your way. My daughter used to be proud of her name. She knew it had a strong beautiful meaning and we encouraged her to embrace it. We even showed her the Youtube video of another young girl near her age that learned to embrace the same name.
Well today the teasing, bullying and harassment at school and online became too much for my sweet little girl and she tried to end her life. Thankfully she is still with us and we are getting her the help she needs, but that doesn't lessen the anger I feel right now. Until recently no one had teased her about her name and my greatest fear was the inevitable confrontation with an ignorant parent of one of her friends but now she is dealing with it from her peers.
A beautiful name ruined by a group that didn't even exist when she was born... a beautiful spirit broken by human ignorance.. and a father feeling helpless with a aching heart wanting to just lash out at the world right now.
To anyone with kids... always make sure they know they can come to you with problems and more importantly make sure to teach them that being bullying little shits is NOT acceptable.
