The vrykul that control the harpoons in Howling Fjord by Utgarde hit INSANELY hard. They have a strike ability with their harpoon that chews out half your health. I was playing on my level 80 iron monk and it hit me for 50-55% of my health. Don't try to kill these guys without EVERY SINGLE ONE of your cooldowns if you're playing Iron, unless you're Hunter or Warlock. If you're a clothie, I wouldn't let them get within melee range EVER.

I'm at level 55 right now and the reality is that there are TOO MANY mobs that hit like trucks, with no indication of it at all by name or size. For example, in Badlands, you can have a big dragon that spits huge flames barely hitting (Scorched Guardian), then move to another area in the same zone and have your pet destroyed in 3-4 hits by some tiny dwarf (Shadowforge Warrior)... It's also interesting that some of these random mobs are more dangerous and harder to kill than most of the rares.
It's preeeeeety stupid. And of course if you play with heirlooms you don't even notice these things, so these changes only affect a tiny fraction of the players, and especially us...
A special kind of really stupid mobs are those that have range attacks that ignore the pet if you stay too far away, like the Ashenvale Outrunners, which can pretty much kill you in several range hits...

It would be nice to have a list of which mobs hit harder and which were easy.

NPCs having Arcane shot ormally hits like a truck. It is in truth fairly random, and I have had my main - who does not like heirlooms and such - almost one-shot by different, especially ranged, NPCs all over the worlds. As he's a Tankadin he almost always survives. I'll begin making a list now.

A Lumbering Relic - Searing Gorge
The quest mob has over 9000 hp at level 56, more than double than the usual quest single mobs. It doesn't hit hard but still kills the pet ones and it take more than 1 minute to kill it

So I was doing "A Fighting Chance" in Hillsbrad Foothills. I used the wand on a fawn, it turned hostile, but when I hit it, its health would immediately shoot back to full, so I started running away with it chasing me, and it exploded and killed me. It went from hitting me for 25 damage to insta-exploding for 359 damage. That hit was more than half my full health.

There's a quest in Ashenvale that nearly killed my Greenman hunter. I cannot remember for the life of me what it was called, because I was fleeing from the scene as soon as I turned it in and didn't bother to remember the name. You pick it up when you are sent into the FAR FAR west, and you approach a giant living tree that has "Baobob" in its name. He's fighting upwards of 30+ demons at a time, who do not turn to aggro you if you get near you since he's holding aggro, but that doesn't mean you are safe. Do not AOE the demons under ANY circumstance. They will turn on you instantly if you so much as breathe in their direction. I used multi shot to try and burst them down (they all have low health) and I had 20 demons turn and slash at me. If I wasn't a Night Elf / Hunter I would have died there. The demons have low damage, but there is strength in numbers, and they daze you quite often. If you're going to complete this quest, do not do any AOE. If you have a Tenacity pet as a hunter, turn off the stomp immediately. It's not worth it.

www.wowhead.com/quest=6621/king-of-the-foulwealdThis quest was a little bit of a trouble as a greenman hunter, but I can imagine that it would be an absolute nightmare for iron characters. The furbolgs come quick, you have no chance to stop and heal/drink/eat, etc, as they come in succession rapidly. The assault lasts for an excruciatingly long time, upwards of 3-4 minutes. It felt like an hour. And when the Chief finally arrives, an extra furbolg will spawn alongside him, and another will in the middle of the fight. I would highly recommend skipping this quest if you are an iron character.

The quest you have to do for Maximillian of Northshire in Un'Goro crater where you mount his horse and confront the devilsaur broodmother... scared the crap out of me. Don't do it. The dinosaurs that chase you on the way there do damage to YOUR character, not the horse, and the Broodmother will attack YOUR CHARACTER, NOT THE HORSE. I was on Greenman so I could take a few whacks but I can imagine it could two shot an iron. I had to feign death while the broodmother was chasing me off the horse.

the mobs for Corruption of the Jadefire have an aura that do a lot of damage on melee. Killed my pet almost every time and so do the jadefire rogues for Fight the Power. But since they already are in combat with npcs, you can wait after it's gone to engage. But be careful they also stun

Iceshatter in Dragonblight will one shot you if you don't have a pet. He has an ability that has a pretty wide range that K/Od my pet in one or two hits. Keep your range from him, and don't engage at all if you're melee, even on Greenman
