I've been levelling up a rogue slowly ish, last one died at 51 to a dc last week did a push and she's now reborn at 42 I think.
Deffo go for wounding over deadly, although I don't use gouge regually the pure fact that it doesn't dot leaves it open to be able to use blind efficiently mid combat if you need a bandage or an escape.
Other things that might help, at 30 going swords instead of daggers and changing my opening to cheap shot instead of ambush is formidable. 40 energy for 2 combo points hell yes with a bonus 4 second stun. This normally allows another 2 sinister strikes before the mob wakes up. Deffo a mega improvement over ambush.
Lastly don't think twice, always slice and dice. It's my finisher of choice and I always have it up, deffo more of a priority to recuperate and stuns. 99% of your damage is white melee and sinister strikes so a 40% increase on white damage yes please.

You guys have convinced me. According to skada the damage difference between wounding and deadly isnt that big. At least not compared to the overall damage output. It is better to play it safe over slightly more dps.
And I did the same thing with cheap shot, it really lowers the damage you take. Occasionally I still use Ambush if I want to kite the mob somewhere right away. But why go swords over daggers? Because of the higher base damage and how that translates into sinister strike damage?
And I like slive and dice how the stronger mobs. Build up some combo points on a weaker mob nearby - eat up - slice and dice and restealth to engage the rare or quest mob. For weaker mobs I usually just use Recup for sustain. Eviscerate still has uses but only does good damage with 4 or 5 combo points. Also Ive just imported 2 macros:
#showtooltip Blind /cast [@mouseover, harm] [@focus, harm] [] Blind
To blind a mob aggroing without having to switch from my current target
#showtooltip Gouge /stopattack /cast Gouge
To avoid breaking the CC prematurely. I pretty much only use Gouge to disengage. 3 seconds is quite a bit of time to create some distance between me and a mob.

But why go swords over daggers? Because of the higher base damage and how that translates into sinister strike damage? Yep, this exactly, admittedly, you don't get so many sinister strikes off since the energy cost went up, but it's still a good chunk of damage Btw your Gouge macro shouldn't be needed, since the spell automatically turns off your attack anyway, unless something's changed since I last used it (admittedly that was in MoP!)

Honestly I've never seen the deadly poison DoT "tick" create an issue for me anyways as gouge is such a short duration. I find it most useful as just an extra interrupt and it is far better to just sprint away or stun the mob if you want to bandage rather than trying to squeeze a bandage tic in during the short window of gouge. I'd much rather get more/full tics of bandage healing in than waste one or maybe two during a gouge... and if you are so desperate that one or two tics will save things you likely got in over your head to begin with. Vanish/SM and live to fight another day... or 2 minutes later.
Edit: As for blind I can't say I've used it as an "escape" tool. I usually just use it to separate a double spawn to fight them one at a time... so for such use deadly vs wound doesn't matter. I know on a normal character deadly does more damage than wound but I guess I never really tested for an iron. Something to keep in mind going forward I guess now.
Per WoWhead:
- Wound poison does 13% of attack power instantly.
- Deadly Poison does 25% of attack power over 12 secs plus an additional 13% each time it procs if already applied.
Honestly though so little of your total damage comes from poisons anyways (maybe a little over 10%) I can see why wound is probably the way to go if you are concerned about Blind/Gouge breaks.

Loving Outlaw. Pistol shots are the shit. The buffs from Roll the Bones will be handy too.
