We're missing a thread about paladins. Only I have not so much experience. I rolled a Draenei Pally because it was the one I died least with while questing. Pro et cons: . You are not so squishy, but have no pet. You can heal, but the DPS after 20-ish is nothing to be proud of. You will run out of mana after 1-2 combats. Keep water/milk whatever handy. Always buy the best gear available. You will NOT need to study Righteous fury Who needs more aggro, and maybe not Redemption either. You get a cheap mount at lvl 20. Consecration might not be worth the bother. It does low damage and drains a tad more than half your mana. Exorcism I only use to two-shot lone casters. It is mana-expensive, so against multiple attackers it is slow suicide. What I do. At all times have Devotion Aura and Seal of Righteousness up and running. Attack: pull with Hand of Reckoning (after 14) else Judgement, Crusader Strike, Crusader Strike, Judgement, Crusader Strike. (Hopefully enemy is dead by now ) Word of Glory. Phew. Two handed-weapon for greater DPS or shield for better armour? I chose shield because I hate ending a fight on less than a fourth of my HP left, but I see others choose differently.

Hello! New to all of this, so I'm mostly just checking in and saying Hi. I've made it to level 16 as a Draenai paladin on Steamwheedle Cartel (Ferroud). As such I don't have any useful information to pass along!

I've now made it to lvl 31. I'm still using much the same routine as described earlier, with a Holy Wrath thrown in from time to time especially when fighting multiple enemies. I'm so looking forward to Seal of Insight at lvl 32. I choose Devotion Aura to Retribution Aura for that extra armour. The extra damage seems not worth it, as it often kills them off right before my last Crusader Strike, thus giving my Word of Glory less healing.
Could some older paladin pipe in with some words of wisdom, please?

I don't know how much wisdom this is but I'll pipe in. I have had 3 paladins in this challenge and am working on my 4th one (the other 3 died at 44, 55 and 66 with my 4th one currently at 35). I use Seal of Insight for the healing and mana regen and Devotion Aura for the extra armor - remember to refresh Devotion Aura after every level up as it does not automatically increase for you unless you do this (I didn't know that until someone mentioned it in iron chat a couple of months ago). I also switch to sword and board when I got my level 32 white armor because I wanted the extra armor the shield gives. I have found that if I pull more than expected or something attacks me while I'm already fightin something I am more than capable of handling it that way since my health doesn't drop as quickly. My rotation is simple - Exorcism, judgment, crusader's strike and holy wrath, then judgment and crusader's strike as they come off cool down. If I'm fighting a rare or a "boss" I will use Exorcism a couple of times to get their health down quickly so I can finish them off even if I go oom. I will use Word of Glory if my health is has dropped by about .25 or more. Most mobs die pretty quickly and I don't use it as much since I got Seal of Insight at level 32. I also do not go after anything unless I'm at full health and mana (there are exceptions to this rule but it's usually because something has come up and hit me while I'm regaining these things). I am careful about my pulls and will go around the perimeter of my target areas pulling mobs one at a time. I try not to go into the center of the target areas because of respawns and the chance of things patting by or near you. It it's a hard hitting mob I will use Divine Protection (you get this at level 34) after using Exorcism to negate some of the damage I would take. I used this more in Outland than Azeroth (I should have used it on my first paladin against the Lone Hunter and she might not have died at 44 ). As you get higher you would use Hammer of Wrath (level 46) as a finisher (like I needed to say that). Hand of Freedom (level 52) to escape things and Rebuke (level 54) to silence those pesky casters. At level 56 you get Blessing of Might which increases attack power and mana regen but I found that I prefer Blessing of Kings. I liked the 5% to my stats - strength, stamina (health) and intellect (mana) but that's my preference and others may prefer Blessing of Might. You don't get any new spells until level 62 and I didn't get much use out of Crusader Aura and Divine Light (3 second cast on this!). I always make sure I'm in the highest armor I can get for that level. White armor is available from the vendors at levels 5, 12, 17, 22, 32 and 45 (this one will be plate while the others will be mail). You will also need to be looking for greys to fill the gap from 50 - 61 and this is the Light Plate set with pieces ranging from 49 - 53. From this point on you will be looking for greys. I start collecting my plate sets around this time (always believe you will be needing these armor sets - never give up!). These sets consist of 8 pieces and are: Tarnished (61), Deteriorating (67), Ice-Bound (71), Frost-Worn (77), Perforated (80) and Bleached (82). I haven't done much with the weapons but at 60 I made a special trip to Temple of Telmahut for the Ancient Bone Mace that is excellent. At level 50 make a trip to the Darkmoon Faire to get Last Year's Mutton - believe it or not it one of the best one hander's out there until you get to level 60. As for shields, at 45 you can get a white shield, Crested Heater Shield with 1247 armor. This is the best you can get for awhile. If you can find the grey shield, Crested Buckler (level 51) with 1299 armor, you will be set until you get to Level 70 and can get the Layered Bone Shield with 1622 armor. This will be your last upgrade. There is a Level 75 shield, Brunnhildar Shield but at 1509 it has less armor than the Layered Bone Shield. Try to milk Azeroth for all the xp you can get out of it before heading to Outland! I went out there at level 61 being halfway to level 62. The higher the better! You will probably bounce between Hellfire Peninsula (HFP) and Zangarmarsh (ZM). The demons and ghosts in HFP are not much of an issue but the other things out there hit hard! Pulling strategy is the same here as in Azeroth. Get as much as you can between these two and if you have to, let the quests turn green and wait a bit to try them. If you need to, add Terrokkar Forest (TF) into the mix. Just get us much as you can out of these zones before moving on. This is as far as I got so I have no advice for any of the other zones in Outland. Hope this helps!

Thanks, Katrii. Just the kind of wise comments I was looking for. My main is a paladin as well, but iron pallys are a bit different -- and more fun -- to play. And I just checked, he hit level 30 back in February '07! ;D It is nice to have many of my thoughts confirmed and get some new looks at other points.

Hi all. So glad to see fellow pallys. It is still my favorite class, which is why I decided to make my Ironman a pally. Ironkyrie (aka Ky) here from Nazgrel. Level 29. Due to RL, I haven't played her in a couple of weeks, but I am heading back soon! Will share what I can...but I found Hand of Protection (if I'm recalling it correctly) to be a lifesaver at times. Toss it on and heal like crazy before re-engaging. I'm a "newb" still since I've only played WoW for a few months so I probably use more things than others need. :-) Will keep you posted. Thanks, Katrii. Good advice to follow. Stay safe.

hey all, u should rethink retribution aura. not sure how long it will stay this way, but up til 40 it's been doing roughly 10% of my damage. devo gives me roughly 3-4% reduced damage. if you drink a lot between pulls it might be a bit different (i'm using no drinks/food), but it didn't seem to change after i got seal of insight and was able to start doing a full rotation. ret > devo, at least into the 40s. i'm having a tough time with kings, too. 20% attack power is way better than 5% strength, and the mana regen is way better than 5% int and should enable additional exorcisms, rebukes, or even (/gasp) a consecrate?! u do lose the 5% stam but i can't see this outweighing the added dps of might. EDIT: the fuzzy numbers on ret aura here were with sword and board. using a 2h will devalue ret aura dps-wise, as will fighting a slow-swinging mob. the dps is still higher than the damage mitigation in any single target context i've seen, and would still recommend it unless ur feeling "too squishy" generally speaking. u can swap to devo in multi-target fights. either way it's not likely to make or break you. specifically responding to motherowl, the scenario you described (ret aura kills a mob before you can use the next CS) is basically irrelevant, as either way u won the fight. it also saved you the mana of the CS, which i would consider more important (especially since i typically have holy power to spare). holy light and CS are nearly equal mana-wise.

some other little tips: quest with your hearthstone off cd all the time. quest with lay on hands off cd all the time. if you use it, hearth and log. same goes for bubble imo, as you should never die from falling if ur a paladin use your stun right. if ur against a caster, stun him at the end of his cast. fill the stun with a crusader strike (can't be dodged/parried since they're stunned) and castbar abilities if needed (won't get pushback). judgment, holy wrath, exorcism cannot be dodged/parried. recognize that a tough fight is going to be about living between WoGs. don't blow everything (defensive cds) up front while ur still waiting to use your first WoG, leaving yourself struggling to live until the 2nd one. casting HL/DL to stay alive in this spot stops your autoattack, rotation, and insight procs. farm undead mobs the stun is sweet, and exorcism is auto-crit. holy wrath and HoJ, of course, share diminishing returns. don't forget about holy wrath as a tool against mobs that flee. at least at low levels, it generally does the job by itself. hope this helped

Hi all you dead or alive pallys out there. How did you die and what was your experience? Is it possible to level an iron paladin past level 50, or will we go OOM before the enemy is dead at lvl 60-70?

remember to refresh Devotion Aura after every level up as it does not automatically increase for you unless you do this (I didn't know that until someone mentioned it in iron chat a couple of months ago). This was very good advice. I missed that extra protection on my first couple of toons. Maybe even Rustypally would have been alive yet had I known ...

Hi all you dead or alive pallys out there. How did you die and what was your experience? Is it possible to level an iron paladin past level 50, or will we go OOM before the enemy is dead at lvl 60-70? My first one, Katrii, died at Level 44 to the Lone Hunter in EPL. I wasn't watching my health until too late as I didn't realize he had a bleed effect that stacked. This was carelessness on my part being used to taking him down with decent gear on. My second one, Karimetra, died at Level 55 in the Burning Steppes. Once again, didn't think about having one hoof in the lava when I turned to fight a worg and died just as I realized my health was dropping dramatically. My third one, Kahdrii, died at Level 66 in the Bone Wastes. Line of sight got me as the caster ran and went behind a post that I couldn't stun her through. She brought 3 others with her when she returned and I had no where to run as they were 2 melee and then 2 casters. The melee had poisons which slowed your run speed and my heals couldn't keep me up as I tried to get out of there so they beat me down. I'm on my fourth try, Kahtraa and she's currently alive at 52 playing in Tanaris. I have my beta invite so I haven't been playing her for the last couple of days but I'm hoping to get her to at least 77 before she dies (the others seem to be dying 11 levels apart so this one should make it to level 77 ;D ). So, you can see that it is indeed possible to level a paladin past 50 and you won't go OOM too quickly.

Thanks, bromli, for sharing your experiences. I had not even given retribution much of a thought honestly. I will look into it. Ironkyrie is my first toon, and she got to lvl 45 yesterday. I had a few scares which showed me why so many pallys die at this time. I have become more leary of trying anything I once thought of as "easy" or "doable." I love my guild, but I am only getting advice from hunters which makes it very difficult. I am currently stuck on the Tony Two-Tusk quest in 1k Needles...and all other quests are blocked until I complete it. He has 6k health and wowhead says he has to be taken out quick. Quite a problem for my tiny pally. Think I'm going to head back to green quests and revisit WPL and maybe some of EPL. I tested out Tanaris and Badlands. Tanaris mobs are manageable if you know quests (which I do) but had a nasty experience in Badlands. Will wait a few lvls to return. All of that to say...I believe it's completely doable to have a pally get to 85. I'm hoping Katrii will verify this for me soon-ish. ;-) Not going to push her because I really want to see her make it! No matter what...if/when I die, I will be rerolling a pally. She's been a joy to play and has helped me appreciate and love the game more. Making plans for 45-47 before heading full-time into Tanaris and Felwood...with some Badlands at 50-51/52. Not wanting to head to Outlands until 61.

Tony Two-Tusk is very doable just a pain in the kiester to get done. He does have a lot of health and you will probably go oom on it but don't panic and take it easy and keep using word of glory. After hitting him a bit he will jump into a chest and then the chests move around so you lose track of him and then he pops up and asks for help. Some guys will shoot at you from the other chests but I kept hitting Tony and keeping the holy powers up. Use your Divine Protection every time it comes off cooldown. Tony will go into the chest again and then some other things come out to help him, this repeats until you get him down. You will need to use Divine Plea (like I needed to tell you that).
I did this using a sword and board, Devotion Aura and Blessings of Kings. I don't remember what level I was but from Kahdrii's journal entries I would say I was around level 48/49 when I did Thousand Needles. I try to outlevel any area I am questing in by about 3 or 4 levels.
If you do go into EPL, remember to be careful of the Lone Hunter question - Pamela gives it to you. He has a bleed effect that stacks and can kill you quickly even if you have heals. My first pally died to him at level 44 and I skipped him on my next 2 pallies but Kahtraa went and killed him but she was also around 49/50 when I did it and her health still dropped dramatically several times and I did end up using Lay on Hands.
If you haven't already, start looking for your next set of gear. The Light Plate stuff starts around 49 and goes up to about 53 or so. Then the Tarnished set at 61. I have managed to collect almost all the pieces I need all the way up to level 80 as some of these pieces can be difficult to find on the AH.
Also, once I learned Blessing of Might I started using that exclusively instead of Blessing of Kings. I still prefer Seal of Insight over Seal of Truth. I tried Seal of Truth several times but I'm more comfortable with the heals I get off of Seal of Insight. Use what makes you comfortable, though.

So ladies (and gentlemen) who have gone before ----- At this level (45), I am really struggling with the "what should I do's." A part of me wants to try the quest at 1k Needles so I can finish the area or die trying (literally). Another part of me wants to be more cautious and continue in another area. Gah! So should I just put on my big girl pants and go? I figure I'm probably going to die at some point...and most likely more than once. It's what makes this challenge exciting (and frustrating)...the unknown. What makes you decide to push forward or to hold back and move elsewhere? Just wanted to hear your thoughts. My guild is full of hunters...or other casters. I am currently the only active pally. We have a warrior but his highest has been 36 so far...so no help there. I know this is different for everyone, and I am not asking for advice as to what I should do. I guess I'm still trying to decide what my playstyle should be for this toon and for the challenge. I need to decide...especially before Outlands (which I skip all quests on toons and do dungeons and bgs). (Uh-oh! )
