I've read other people's posts and I chose a slightly different strategy. Most people seem to be doing quests their level or a couple levels lower than them.
My strategy is to keep the mobs/quests as low green as possible for the following reasons (note: at 44 I still get exp from killing mobs 8 levels lower than me):
1. Easier to hit: Since we can't get any "to hit" we miss mobs our level way too much (I play a rogue so it's really noticeable to me). As the mobs are lower level we miss alot less.
2. Mobs hit less: even killing mobs several levels lower than me, they still have more hit points than me...so, I need to do more damage to them than they do to me at any given time.
3. Smaller agro radius: What kills most people is the unexpected. And, if you're several levels higher than the mobs around you the chance of you getting an add decreases substantially. (they also have a harder time seeing through stealth).
Blizzard made tons of quests for this game...alot more than needed to hit 85. I take advantage of this abundance of quests by doing all the quests avaialable (without seriously risking death)...even if that means I have to take the time to go to another continent.
I realize the down side of this is it takes longer to level. But, what takes longer? Having to restart several times or going slow the first time?

I'm not quite so scientific. However, I do make every effort to stick to green quests.
Biggest argument against slow leveling is longer play means more d/c opportunities. Of course if you d/c in a fight against a low-level mob, you probably have a better chance of surviving a short d/c or lag spike.

Honestly I do the same thing, even back when I was leveling toons in full BoA gear. I enjoy questing, and there are many more benefits than you listed for doing quests below your level.
As a priest though, low agro radius is the big one. But reputation is a nice bonus too - I've got 16 slot bags from every faction already, plus the vendor discount.
But as to your question - I know from experience that it does take a long time - a guesstimate would be about twice as long as a normal 1-85 journey. But hey, who's in a hurry right? I know it feels like it takes forever to travel back and forth between continents, but really I don't think it takes much more than 5 minutes, and I enjoy the breaks.

One option for levelling is saving any good gear in your bank so that if your iron dies your toon can have something useful to fall back on. I used to delete my toons when they died but then I decided I'd rather save them and use them as scouts or pvp with them or whatever.

I'm in Outland currently (66) so I can give some tips! I went there at level 63 1/2 after doing almost every possible quest level 50+ just to get high enough to outlevel the mobs. At this point they start getting quite close to your level.
The reason it's so hard, especially early on in Hellfire, is patrols. The are the stuff of nightmares. Every bunch of mobs has multiple pats and they are all fairly close. I would pull from ranged, losing my 4 point opener, just to make some space, and then run back to give myself more space. Be patient!
I completed a lot of quests by doing only one bit at a time, waiting for it all to respawn then doing that same bit again. The invasion points usually had one simpler mob (eg. the cannon quest) which could be killed, then I'd go do something else and come back to kill the same mob again. I finished the Cenarion Circle red giant quests at 66 without too much trouble and they still gave decent experience.
So, do everything humanly possible in the vanilla areas before going to Outland - start planning at level 45 not to skip ahead to give yourself every drop of experience possible.
And....have your sound turned up for Hellfire is all I have to say. FEL REAVER!!!

Also, after every kill do a complete swirl with your camera to see what what in your environment (some like to also keep their camera at max distance).

Agreed, I try to stay as aware of my surroundings as possible, and although I don't yet have to do only green quests I do try to stay one zone below where I'm supposed to be. Even green quests can kill you if they are unfamiliar so I usually try to stick to what I know.

Agreed, 100%. Starting doing those tactics from my 2nd-3rd go onward. The further you go, the more important that buffer becomes, class-depending, of course.

As a newbie to this, it seems to me that simply grinding mobs is a very good strategy.
My iron is currently 26, and this challenge is making me notice things I never paid attention to before!
I notice that 8-20 mobs is equivalent to a quest, depending on mob level and rested state. Where I would normally avoid mobs on my way to a quest, as a waste of time, I now stop and kill them all, as a good source of XP.
When I find a spot with plentiful but well spread out mobs, preferably close to my level, I set up camp and spend a while just picking them off one by one.
Of course, the numbers may change as I get higher, but, together with playing my iron 30-60 minutes a day, this is working for me at the moment.

At low levels it can be decent exp, yes, but when you reach high end levelling it's not so useful as exp is lowered if you're too high level for the expansion content you're working on. So when I was 86-89 and not really able to kill Pandaria mobs, I was killing Cata mobs for a tiny fraction of the exp that one Pandaria mob would give (we're talking 300-400 exp vs 20k). Some classes (hunters) can probably grind Pandaria mobs but I didn't want to take the risk, so while farming dailies is not so challenging as I would like, it was the most effective method...

The plain & simple fact is we cannot quest mop content. And, we will run out of quests that we can do. So without other options, such as grinding, dailies, treasures, etc. There's no way to get to 90. In the good old days, we only had to get to 80, which meant only very little needed to be done in cata content. Now, most of it needs to be done. I don't remember how many quests I did in each cata zone, but if anyone is interested, I can look it up and post.
I applaud anyone who makes it even to 85 so long as it wasn't through pet battles & such. Getting to 85 is truly an achievement in itself.
The concept of ironman changed somewhat, at least from 85-90, when we were given 5 more levels from a content that there is no way we can do. And even setting foot in mop was terrifying for me.
For those interested, grinding level 85 mobs in Northrend is not only easier than Cata but it also gives more xp per kill.
Good luck everyone.

Actually as hunter (or warlock also) you can do almost all quests in Jade forest and something in Valley of 4 winds and Kun-lai. I did 88-90 in these three zones (almost completed Jade forest, did some easy quests in the other 2)
And, where are 85 mobs in Northrend? ;D You can grind 80 mobs in Icecrown until you reach 87 I think before they turn grey (i grinded scarlet mobs on that little isle in Icecrown for a while they were giving 1k exp each)

I do at level or over quests untli leve 20 or thereabout, when the difference in gear begin to matter. From there on, I slowly scale down until I at leve 35 is doing deep green ones. All this will of course change when I once again - hopefully - make it that far without Seal of Insight giving my poor IMC-Paladin any mana back. I think I'm stuck with grey quests from 30.

Probably a little late on this one but level 80 mobs in icecrown give over 1k per kill all the way to level 89. I must have killed 35000 of them grinding it out.
