Here's a quick macro that you can use to make a safe mount keybind:
1) Type /macro:
2) Click [New] at the bottom.
3) Name it whatever you want, don't bother trying to change the icon. Once you've named the macro, move your mouse below list of icons and click [Okay]
4) Copy this text, paste it in the box under "Enter Macro Commands". If you don't have any of the listed mounts, replace them with names of mounts you do have.
4a) If you just want a single mount macro, replace line 3 with:
(Again, you can replace "Snowy Gryphon" with the name of any mount you own).
5) Click Save.
6) Drag the icon to your mount keybind on your action bars.
7) Now you have a mount macro that lets you pick from three mounts--Ctrl+keybind for a vendor mount, Alt+keybind for a flying mount, and just-plain-keybind for a water walking mount.
And, here's the magic part: this macro does absolutely nothing if your mount is in flight. You can press your mount keybind all day long; it won't dismount you unless your mount is standing on solid ground.
(Clicking on the mount icon in your buff section, however, will always dismount you, flying or not, so mouse over your buff list at your own risk.)
Line by line explanation:
* Line one: "#showtooltip" ---- If your macro uses an item/skill that has a tooltip, this will display it.
* Line two: "/stopmacro [flying]" ---- If you're on a flying mount that is currently flying, stop the macro.
* Line three: "/use [mod:ctrl]Traveler's Tundra Mammoth;[mod:alt]Snowy Gryphon;Azure Water Strider" By default, act like a Azure Water Strider mount button. If Ctrl is pressed, act like a Traveler's Tundra Mammoth button, if Alt is pressed, act like a Snowy Gryphon mount button. (If you press both, Traveler's Tundra Mammoth wins since it's listed first)
Since line 1 is #showtooltip, the icon will automatically change as you press Alt or Ctrl.
