If you play a hunter for the challenge, you may notice that when your pet is on "Assist" stance, it will not attack any mobs that hit you. You can, theoretically, body-aggro a mob, D/C, and die because your pet will look the other way. So you put your pet on Defensive stance, but notice the weird hesitation of your pet to growl. You will usually have the mob attack you for upwards of 4-5 seconds before your pet uses growl at all, and frankly, it can get kind of annoying. You always have to send your pet in first and wait until it growls to be able to attack, which is time consuming, especially if you're on Greenman, where the caution levels aren't as high as it is on ironman, so you will look for speed to level. I made a macro after getting annoyed for 9 levels, as it seems this change has come in in 8.1. (Don't quote me on that: I never played on Defensive stance until I watched somebody stream and mention that Assist pets don't help if you DC, and I only switched yesterday.)
/petattack /cast Growl /petattack
The problem with just
/petattack /cast Growl
is that after Growl is cast, your pet will return to your side if it is in defensive stance. If you throw in an extra /petattack, your pet will make a beeline straight towards your thousandth boar you've had to kill today. Additionally, the pet will aggro much sooner than if you only simply bound your "pet attack" key to normal... attack. It saves time, and you can cast it as much as you want for forced Growls when it is off CD.
The benefit of this is you get a much faster "engage" with your enemies while keeping the benefits of defensive stance, making it much less likely to DC and die!
Hope this helps!

My hunters are BM, I keep my pet on passive, and often open combat with 'kill command', followed by 'barbed shot', and that will usually put the aggro on the pet. When I start with something else (like cobra shot) to avoid a multi mob fight, I use those 2 commands immediately after with the same result
Xayanny lvl 49 dwarf hunter (alive) Wyrmrest Accord Xayarida lvl 70 greenman worgen hunter (alive) Wyrmrest Accord Xayabow lvl 117 tinman nightelf hunter Wyrmrest Accord Xayablood lvl 20 bloodthirsty nightelf druid (alive) Wyrmrest Accord Xayapaci lvl 40 pacifist gnome rogue (alive) Wyrmrest Accord
