Uodated at bottom....
Hey. So I've been wondering, since 8.0 and recently 8.1, how is leveling a regular iron? 8.1 introduced some "squish", here's my findings:
- Leveling is faster, mainly because you need less XP to get to the next level.
- Zero change took place to mobs or quest points. Mobs hit just as hard as they did before 8.1
- Rolled an iron rogue (melee). Set spec to Subtlety. Honestly, the 3 specs are very balanced, play the one you know the best.
- Leveling 1-20 is very normal. You can kill rares and named ones.
- After 20 thru 30, rares and named ones still doable, but gotta be careful.
- After 30, rares and named ones are almost impossible. As you gain capabilities, so do they.
- 30-40 leveling was decently paced.
- 50's is the worst bracket to level - very slow, tedious, lotz of ways to die. 60 is the new high mark to get for now.
- Often fights (after 50) take all talents (Shadow Dance, Cheap Shot, Symbols of Death, Evasion, Crimson Tide, and bandages) to kill a regular NPC. Heal / food up after, wait for 3 minutes for all cool downs. A bad-drop-rate quest (mirefin heads) can easily take and hour or two to complete.
- 60's are a breath of relief. You can fly, lots of points, mobs spread out, etc.
- A number of fellow irons have died to game glitches (DCs), and especially to mobs that have a secondary attack. Like ranged aimed shot, fireballs, chain lightning. Only way to survive is to interrupt the cast, kill 'em fast, or abort the attack. Some of these attacks will 1 or 2 shot you to death. Examples: Rare harpy in Stonetalon will 1-shot you. If another player spawns Xandivious in WinterSpring, he will 1-shot you if you get within 30 yards of him. People have been dropped from the air during a taxi ride to another FP (SW to Duskwood).
But, a little bit better since 8.1. Still, for Christmas, Santa could bring patches to above game glitches and reduce mob HP values.
Good luck
Updated: 2 days to go from 60's to 70. Mostly via exploring discovery with flight, non-combat quests, and chests. 60's are MUCH easier than the 50's.

Just got to 70, I can't say I had any problems with most of the rares, some normal mobs are much more dangerous. I stayed in classic zones until level 65, just for the giggles, because the squish destroyed the post level 61 power-up. I didn't feel much difference in leveling past 20 as a BM hunter (it sucks at the same level). I just accepted that I have to revive my pet non-stop. I've done 65-70 in Hellfire alone, at least the XP nerf is something really really good. I had to fight my OCD and not do 3 quests in Hellfire, although I've done some really crazy ones. "WoW is not challenging anymore!". Then try it naked! Now I will chill for a week or so to get rested XP and finally finally finally try BfA on my long forgotten main, which fortunately is also a BM hunter. I also need to level my scout who is at 55 or so, dark times ahead

What seems easy for a class/spec maybe hard for another (or vice-versa), better be more careful than sorry

But, just because 'Star is such an Ironman stud, don't feel pressure to level that fast....it's okay to take a week or two to gain ten levels.

After 80 the squish is as lazy and stupid as before. I've been doing Sholazar Basin from 80 to 82 and the mob damage is all over the place. Dreadsaber hits very hard, the big rhinos like half the damage and the silly giraffes are some vicious killing machines putting the sabers to shame. However when the sabers attack the giraffes they somehow die in 2 hits so that the quest it even more annoying. Then we have the single quest mobs like Pitch, who should be logically more dangerous but they are just pussycats doing tiny little scratches. This squish is like the dumbest thing ever... Combine it with the scaling thing which makes the zone progression completely retarded, because lesser elementals might hit you harder than the greater elementals, par example, and this whole leveling stuff is horrible.
I wish they would have done a better job at this then doing a blanket scaling and mindless squishing...

Another update. 60's and 70's flew by - I went from 70 to 80 is 3 days of regular play. Amazing. 80's are a little slower, but overall, finding plenty to do. Chests, exploring, and non-combat quests keep the pace decent.

Townlong Steppes, during the first quest there www.wowhead.com/quest=30814/a-foot-in-the-doorThe mobs are engaged in a battle and they die quickly, BUT there are some explosions going on around that almost killed me. I got hit once and the hp dropped to like 40%. Then I retreated and fortunately bandaged to around 80% and went back because I needed one more kill and got an explosion again, which got me to 10% lol. Level 93.

I tried to open the garrison with my scout but that's not an option. The quest "The Den of Skog" was surprisingly easy compared to the last time I've done it, just afte 7.3.5, when I had to kite that dude all over the place and had to revive the pet 3 times. But after I create the garrison there's the quest "The Ogron Live?" where I need to kill a 40k mob who hits like a truck inside a cave, which is just not possible or worth the risk. So I will try to level by doing random quests, exploration, treasures and eventually plain grinding. I got to WoD at 94 and managed to get to 95 by exploring Gorgrond and doing some quests.
There's a stupid mob called Thunderlord Wrangler in Frostfire Ridge that randomly ignores pet and hits pretty hard with range attack, about 20% hp. I had to kill 5 of those for a quest and it was very very stressful, once he almost got me.

Looking to get back into irons after my exams are done in early february. I need a memory refresher, so thought this will be a decent place to ask:
Do places you overlevel give you easy, oneshottable mobs? Like dailies in isle of Quel'Danas, or classic zones after 61?

Like dailies in isle of Quel'Danas, or classic zones after 61? you only one-shot mobs when quests give almost no xp. At 61 mobs in Azeroth are almost as hard to kill as 59 and give a lot less xp, while quests still give decent xp. You start to one-shot around 64-65, when quests also give no xp. The same goes for Outland-Northrend, at 81, Cata-Pandaria at 90, and so forth

Thanks! So what is the path for 60+ now? Just straight to Northrend/Outland till 80, then Cata/Pandaria till 90? Any easy dailies to do? And till what level do I want to get XP from Garrison?

And till what level do I want to get XP from Garrison? more or less forced to switch early to the next expansion. For dailies, the Kaluak dailies in Borean Tundra and DragonBlight, the bombing one in Howling Fjord, HalfHill dailies in Pandaria, a few in Tol Barad. My tinman was able to get decent xp from the mine and herb garden up to 103, but opening them is not easy (died at least once trying)

Of course as much as I'd have liked to quit, I just can't stay away, so I'm hoping to hit 90 soon. My question is, what do you do after 91? Panda land provides lots of dailies, but Draenor? I've heard horror stories....and who wants to die after 90?
Thanks, V
