Ready to take a challenge toon to 60 in Shadowlands? Good - I've managed to get an Iron rogue and Iron druid to 60, plus 2Shankz, CorpseGrind, and Xaya have taken pallys and hunters to 60 as well. So it's doable!
Naturally, the normal "your mileage may vary" disclaimers apply. I.e., you need to scout Shadowlands with a similar toon to understand quests, mobs, zones, bonus/world quests, etc. You'll get some of this as you take a regular toon thru the SL campaigns to open up Threads of Fate.
Homework: If you haven't opened up Threads of Fate, do so. (You don't have to do all quests, just the campaign quests for each of the 4 zones.) Your Bliz account needs to have Threads of Fate available, so go do it with a well-geared regular toon/scout. Your second item of homework is to take a similar toon thru the Maw. You need to understand the quests and mechanics of going thru the Maw. It actually becomes no big deal after you've done it several times - but the first time is very intimidating. And dangerous unless you understand how the helper NPCs work, which quests are very dangerous, etc.
- Get a challenge toon of choice to level 50. Utilize Chromie time to zoom up the levels. Cherry-pick quests for maximum XP and least risk. You don't need to do all quests, just pick the best ones for your toon, skip all the rest and you should make good time.
- Once you hit 50, Chromie time will go away. Continue leveling to 52 in non-SL zones. BfA chests will pay very handsomely until 52. The goal here is to save Shadowlands XP till you hit 52. This does 2 things - saves 1-time-only quests for helping you level in SL, and 2) it means you'll be going thru the Maw with a slightly higher level toon rather than at level 50.
- At 52, take your toon thru the Maw. Good luck. Only quest that had me really nervous was the one to kill Ruiner Maroth. I typically hang way back, just out of range, and when a crowd of players runs by, I wait until he is almost dead and tag him from max range. Tag and run. You don't want to melee fight him. If you've done the Maw several times already, you have a feel for how to let your NPC helpers do the heavy lifting, when to hang back, why to avoid swirling circles, etc. You should easily get 1/2 level going thru the Maw.
- You're in Oribos and should pick a covenant. Suggest either Necrolord (for spikes and shield) or Night Fae (for the cute soulshape transformation). Recommend you do not pick Kyrian, you get a Steward who will constantly give you Phials of Serenity. Consuming one of these Phials count as a health potion and will instantly disqualify your toon.
- To ding 53, just do the available Daily Quests that your toon can handle in the various zones, clean out BfA chests. Consult the thread "Mobs and Quests to Avoid in Shadowlands" to see the dangerous quests/mobs.
- From 53 to 60, you'll pretty much work each zone, suggesting Bastion, Ardenweald, and Revendreth. Maldraxxus is liken to Redridge, a very dangerous zone for irons. I've gotten my toons to 60 without going over to Maldraxxus.
- Each 24 hour period, daily Quests will be available. Do the ones you can, skip the dangerous ones. Bonus Quests pay nicely, but they are one time only. Do the ones you can, but they often require large amounts of killing the hostiles. Often they have insane respawn rates, always have an escape. Some days you'll feel like you're making no progress, other days a bunch of daily Quests come up that you can do. Also, there are a number of regular quests that your toon can handle. Rogues love "go collect 10 items off the ground quests". Trial and error will show you which ones you can do. Did I mention scout first? Using your living challenge toon as a scout will get you dead.
Think that's it. Maybe the other players who have reached max SL level will chime in with their thoughts. :- )
Good luck, see you on the leaderboard.
