Hunters have always been my favorite and this preference certainly shows in the characters I have run and continue to run in the Challenge. If I were to add up all the levels from all the past and my current challengers, a total of 6 characters, I have 196 levels, all as Draenei.
All this time playing hunters confirms for me how well suited this class is for soloing, which is at the heart of the challenge. In fact, the challenge plays to the class' strengths. The only weakness I can see is me doing stupid stuff or just sloppy play. As we've already seen, a hunter was the first to meet the challenge having reached 85 earlier this week on Tuesday, 2/28/12.
Let's talk about what makes the hunter so well suited for the challenge, along with other stuff that might actually get us in trouble if we don't play well. For me, I'll try to keep the Draenei factors to the minimum other than to say that the +1hit, the small heal, and the very familiar starting areas go a long way to quickly leveling and continuing to level a Draenei hunter.

Level 10 is a big milestone for hunters. Your number of available abilities more than doubles since you now have a Pet Control bar that lets you have full control of your pet. Later, at level 20, the control bar adds the pet's special abilities.
As you approach level 10, plan on have some silver ready as the training might be too expensive to get all the skills. Be sure to train the Pet Control bar, Aspect of the Hawk, Kill Command at the very least. You will also want Serpent Sting. Other abilities to consider: Tame Beast (get that cat), Feed Pet, Dismiss Pet (in case you need to open up a space for a new tamed pet), Revive Pet. Pick up Track Humanoids and any remaining pet-related ability if you have the spare silver. As you can see, you will need quite a bit of silver at level 10 so plan accordingly.

Can hunters train to use mail armor. Also, some white vendor gear has stats on it. Is this allowable as long as it is white or gray?
I saw an answer or discussion posted but not cannot find it now. Sorry if this is redundant.

Yes, you can use white or gray items even if they have stats.

I'm up to lv.63 and alive still on my hunter, who is also my first attempt at this challenge. As I hit the 40's there are a couple of things that I have been doing that I think have helped me along. 1. My "Safety" shot rotation: Send pet> Hunter's Mark> Concussive Shot> Kill Command> Serpent Sting> Steady Shot. Then Hit Kill Command every time it comes up until Kill Shot lights up. I don't use macros, but I'm sure a lot of this could be macro'd. 2. Once you have control of your pet and Concussive Shot in your arsenal, try doing zones at level and stay away from green quests and grey mobs. Reasoning is that you are getting greater XP per kill and quest while reducing time out killing and questing and hopefully reducing opportunities for mistakes. Hunters are built to solo and so far, other than it taking a little longer to kill an at level or +one level mob, it's been pretty safe and uneventful. 3. No one is going to agree with me on this next one but caves are safer than the great outdoors. First because they're linear, mobs are usually stationary and patrols can usually only come from one direction. In the great outdoors this is not always the case. Also it's easier to tell if you need to wait at the entrance for a respawn for a cave and where the mobs will respawn. Outdoors this isn't always true.

I noticed on my achievement "statistics" that i have one Epic item. I have no idea what this might be unless it is one of my pets or one of my two mounts. I have the Celestial Steed and Tyreals Charger and just vanity pets
Any ideas? I sure don't want to get disqualified

It's Tyrael's Charger and it's fine. All mounts and noncombat pets are fine.

Yes, hunters can train all available skills from the hunter trainer. You cannot choose a spec, use talent points or use your pet's talent points. I hope this helps.
I need to get back to this challenge. I got a Mists beta invite and it's taken my attention away.

At 65 now and mostly used bear but using nether ray now in outlands for the cast interrupt ability.
I hate fighting casters.
