Okay, so I hate making new XPAC levels (60, 70, 80, and now 85), because suddenly the XP for kills and quests in the old XPAC plummets, but the speed and risk levels for doing the old content improve only marginally. Leveling slows to a crawl. Once you get just one more level (61, 71, 81, 86) it speeds up again because of stat squish. You still get squat for XP--but you can at least shoot (no pun intended) through the quest content, one or two-shotting everything.
I made the 60-61 transition mostly by exploring Outland from the air. But it seems like that exploration XP for the new zone gets you less and less each time. I remember the 80-81 transition being a real slog.
So I'm at 85 as of this morning. Told myself I'd just slog through Vash'jir quests this time. But I did a bunch of them this morning and only made like 4-5 bars, getting maybe 3-4 K per quest (and a minuscule 20 xp per kill!). I'm dreading the rest--and besides, Vash'jir is not without risk, at least until the stat squish. Once I hit 86, everything will be easy again--but I have to get there.
So should I be exploring Pandaria instead--maybe even setting up farming dailies or something? Is there a "back door" so I can get there and just explore--or do I have to do the intro quests--and are they too risky for an iron 85?
Another complication is that all my level (non-iron) 100's are Hordes (on another server). I have a mothballed squad of Alliance 85's on yet another server, but I've never actually hit Pandaria with them (I'll have to be really careful not to fly into the wrong city in the golden valley!) I'll take one out and scout for differences--anything I should be aware of?
So I humbly request the accumulated wisdom of Iron elders. What do I need to know? What previous threads should I be looking at?
P.S. I found a nice thread from Tanee which accumulates various insights about the 85-90 process--but it seems to be from before WoD, and some of it seems no longer relevant or accurate.

Man up and do jade forest quests Alas, my toon is a female Night Elf, so I don't do "man up" Also, I saw what eventually happened to blogger Asmongold when he keep trying to level his iron hunter in level-neutral zones. And he's a good player! Myself? A mere shell of a huntard? I suspect you're trying to get me killed with your brazen challenge!

There is nothing really that can kill you in jadeforest as long as you skip the quest where you have to kill the boss guy at the top of the big building

From my experience: - if you play conservative and don't skip too much, Northrend has enough content to get you to 86 when Cata zones are easy. - if not you can combine Cata zones exploration with some 80-85 dailies (Icecrown/Argent Tournament dailies give you the same exp as Vashjir quests). Pandaria treasures are available as well after a couple of non-combat intro quests but you will be on foot (no flying until 90) and contrary to the opinion above, I think plenty of stuff can kill you at 85 in Jade Forest - don't do any of the Cata zones until 86. The risk/reward ratio is really bad.

I agree with Lyssan. Pandaria at 85 will be rough. Did it at 91 with Xayaforsi, and if I had not used a scout I would not have made it to 100
Xayaforsi lvl 100 pandaren hunter (alive) Wyrmrest Accord Xayathedruid lvl 34 night elf druid (alive) Wyrmrest Accord Xayahorde lvl 12 bloodelf rogue (alive) Wyrmrest Accord Xayapaci lvl 29 pacifist rogue gnome (alive) Wyrmrest Accord Xayablood lvl 19 bloodthirsty draenai hunter (alive) Wyrmrest Accord

I have indeed been trying to clear out Northrend, and throwing in 6-7 Icecrown dailies, but I pretty much ran out of quests right before I hit 85--unless I wanted to return to Stormpeaks and do the "dragon-jumping/Valkyrie" quest near the top of the Temple of Storms. Doing it would open up a lot more Stormpeak quests--but I've heard it can glitch. There's a lot of Cata exploring I haven't done. Combine that with a few days of Northrend dailies and I'll muddle through to 86 soon enough, then it will get easy again.

You can start the intro quest line to get to Pandaria. Take the gunship from Stormwind. You'll have to shoot some horde and a couple of ships (from a helicopter vehicle) but that is risk free. (Sadly I don't know how pacifists do it). You then pick up a parachute and jump off the gunship. You land (all the time) very near a dwarf questgiver. I never take those quests as they involve killing nearby orcs which my druids and priests were absolutely NOT capable of killing at 85. The stealth classes can proceed to sneak/prowl over to the nearby Alliance town.
On my priest, I just hearthed from the landing point back to Stormwind. The portal to Pandaria is open so you can go back directly to the Paw'don village so you can explore, etc. until you feel comfortable trying to kill things.
At level 90 (since WoD launched) the flight path to the Shrine is open to you so you can go there to buy Pandarian flying.

Sounds good, Ferre. I was wondering if that was possible (going to Pandaria on the airship, parachuting down and then just stealthing/hearthing out) when I tried going to Pandaria with a test non-iron earlier this afternoon. I did learn that trying to do any combat quests there at level 85 was asking for trouble Probably doable on an iron hunter--but no reason to take the chance.

Also at 85 Tol Barad opens up. At 85, only do non-combat quests (how do magnets work, etc.).... Rogue/Druid has more options with sneak. At 86, TB is easier, almost 2 shot everything. At 87, even the shark is doable...

As a hunter, I found Cata starting zones very easy. I've jumped to MH as soon as I reached level 80 and stayed there until Aviana quests then moved to Vashj'ir. Here was again very easy until I died on the fucking retarded shark quest because my new UI (ElvUI) didn't have the button to blow it up. Buhahaha. I have a new rule now, skip every retarded quest that's not kill or fetch. I was already skipping all the vehicle quests, since my first iron dude died at level 22 in Barrens, while riding a rocket for a bugged quest.
