OK, so I know the rules say that if you need to use an elixir to complete a quest, then you are allowed to take it once. I just came across this quest, and it's the first time a quest has asked me to use an elixir, so before I do, I just want to be certain of how to go about this. Stone, do I need to let you know about the elixir and the related quest if I ever need to take one, or how does it work?

What if you abandon the quest, do it again, and use the elixir more than once?

I'm pretty sure that's not allowed. You have one chance to do the quest. If you abandon it or fail it or the elixir effect time limit runs out before you can complete it, tough.

Over the years of Ironman, both the older website and today's website graciously maintained by Stone, the idea of allowing elixirs/potions for a quest has always been "best effort". I.e., allow or not, detect and not count, what about repeats, what if it is an elixir that is both quest provided and also available as an elixir for normal play? (Example: Potion of water breathing)
The pro irons have a simple strategy: just skip the quest, don't drink the elixir. In the grand scheme of leveling to 100, the points gained from that quest won't matter. And you won't have that elixir in your statistics that has to be offset in the website code....
Just skip it, it's not worth it.
imho

I skipped that elixir quest, though I did do use two other quest elixirs. * If you take a quest-related elixir, you're committed to completing that quest. * WoW is a little inconsistent about quest items. E.g., there's Ethereum Essence, a consumable that gives a buff needed to finish a quest, but that counts as a "Beverage" on your armory page. Go figure. * I also avoided using WoD's Elixir of Shadow Sight. I don't know if Stone's code supports treasure-related elixirs.

I agree with Ster, best to just skip it. The XP you get isn't really worth it and I haven't personally come across any that prevented me from progressing in the zone.

Not exactly the answer I'm looking for, (I still don't really understand how the elixir thing works,) but I can accept it, especially as the only quest this quest leads to is insanely impossible even on a character that's not an Iron.

The rule of thumb is any quest with an elixir involved can be done, its when you use the elixir twice or the quest asks you to use the elixir multiple times, is when you get red flagged, i have had first hand experience of this and have been red flagged before at 73, after conversations i found this out, so the easy answer is you can use the elixir and do the initial quest but when it asks you to do it again and collect scrolls, defintely do not, as the system will flag you. Its like the underwater breathing potions you get in zangar for the numerous quests, you can use 1 but if you use another that flags you. Hope this helps. Yeah it does, thank you. Ironically I've never taken under water breathing potions. Just assumed that as you can complete the quest without them, the elixir exception thing didn't apply there.

I have added an exception to allow multiple usage if it happens only one time but I really wouldn't test that. Overall it would probably be simpler to just say don't bother doing elixir quests. If you can complete the quest with only one use, great. After that I'd abandon it. The Elixirs to get treasures in Spires of Arak *might* count towards your elixir use, however, I also wouldn't bother as those treasures only reward gold, not experience.

Since I've played IMC for a bit and started when Casa had the old website up I just didn't do elixir quests. Originally there wasn't any deviation from this so I've just stuck with it. Stones added more flexibility on those type of quests but I've just stayed away from them out of habit. As Ster mentions above the little xp isn't worth it and it would be easier on Stone to not have to program in a bunch of exceptions as quests change and expansions come out.
