Anyone have any good suggestions for next quest area for a level 40? Any places to stay away from because you've had trouble there or any places you would highly recommend? I'm not over-joyed in my selections when I look at the maps.

The Plaguelands in Eastern Kingdoms sadly seem to have claimed a few folks recently ... so may be an area to avoid perhaps. (Plaguewood/Corin’s Crossing especially are a couple of trouble spots). Personally, I think that I will be heading to Thousand Needles. I’ve not been there since Cata hit and have absolutely no idea what to expect, but that’s a big part of the appeal! No matter which area you choose, I hope Katrii’s spirit remains strong throughout the adventures that lie ahead Safe travels!

Lili, if you go to 1k, be careful of a flying quest out at the barge. apparently it drops you at the end, and a few challengers dropped down to a handful of health left. a few reported nearby hostile mobs after landing, and a couple died

Thousand Needles has easier mobs until you get the Freewind Brave. Don't even try the elite (unless you are a hunter or lock, maybe a mage - Paladin and Warrior can't deal enough damage before their Brave dies). Better stop there then and go somewhere else (I had 42/60 quests at this point).
Eastern Plaguelands is okay if you don't try the hard quests. "I am not supposed to tell you that..." or what the quest from Pamela Redpath is is one of those. Apparently, the wolf has a stacking DoT/debuff that deals 130 damage per stack. Tyr's hand on the other hand is quite easily, mobs have really low health (1,1k - 1,3k, compared to around 2k+ for all other mobs in Eastern Plaguelands), the endboss might be tpugh with his 4,1k HP and beware of the Scarlet Praetorian's Holy Strike and the Scarlet Arch Mages Fireball, as both attacks deal 300+ damage and will probably be used more then once.
Another Paladin, level 47 now, went to Tanaris. Apparently, at least the start is quite easy. But I wasn't there yet, so no idea.
Edit: I went to Southern Barrens and ended that at 36 - and then went to Desolace from 36-39 and dinged on the breadcrumb to Feralas 40. Finished Feralas with 43 and then went to Thousand Needles till 46 were I had to leave because of the elite quest mentioned above.
