Should there be a rule change with the current difficulty of the challenge?
My answer to this is no. Instead of a rule being changed, what I think should be changed is the leaderboard. A filter should be added to the leaderboard coinciding with major blizzard changes (specs, 7.3.5, etc.) that have made the challenge either more difficult or less difficult.
There are 2 reasons I believe this is a better change than a rule change:
1) Blizzard can change anything anyway they want at any time. This is completely out of our control and we have no say on this and we never will. Now that has been said, the one thing that should always remain constant is the rules because that is the one thing we can control. If we change the rules we cannot simply change them back. I'll give an extreme example of something we wouldn't do just to make my point - what if we allow greens? Well that may make the challenge better right now, at any time blizzard could revert the change of 7.3.5 and then we would be stuck with greens. So at the very least rule changes should only be made as a last resort.
2) I think our vision on the challenge is greatly skewed by the relatively recent addition of specs. I think we see every class at the top of the leaderboard and we think that's how the challenge currently should be. I joined this community in the beginning of WOD before specs. The top of the leaderboard was almost exclusively hunters and there were clear tier lists for every class. A couple classes were even thought to be impossible to reach max level. There was one warrior that made it in the 70s and several people thought the person was cheating because it was thought to be impossible for a warrior to complete the challenge until Lyssan did it. Prior to Lyssan completing the challenge on a warrior, I gave it a shot and got to the 40s until I died to a named mob 9 levels below me. My point is that at that time my goal was not to get 100 it was to be the highest warrior on the leaderboard. I think this is a healthier way to look at the challenge, to one challenge yourself. Can I get farther than I did last time? And instead of looking at the leaderboard as a whole, look at it class by class.
I have played through 3 iterations of this challenge (pre specs, post specs, 7.3.5). I think adding a filter is a healthy change for the challenge because it gives us something current to compete against instead of a previous iteration of the challenge which may be easier or more difficult. Also, this idea may help keep the community more active similar to the way many Diablo 3 players come back to the game when a new season comes out.
Cons:
- More work for Stone.
- This is a pseudochange in attempt to change the mentality of the challenge. This will not change the current state of long fights and may not be a big enough change for some.
TL;DR: Adding a filter to indicate major changes in the challenge (specs, 7.3.5) promotes a healthier outlook on the challenge and does not require a rule change, which is most likely impossible to undo. Also, adding a filter instead of new lists keeps the site from being cluttered.
