Any pro good tips for dealing with named mobs? I am currently 27 and have a real difficulty dealing with named mobs that are 4 levels less than me. The main issue is, they hit super hard so really I cannot afford to be touched, I hit like a wet noodle. Strategy so far... Open with frost bolt then fire ball X2 if I have the time, frost nova, run away, frost bolt and fire ball x 2 again, cone of cold, blink fire ball repeat. The problem is, if they resist frost nova I can't win so I have to run away and sometimes everything seems to have to be timed well especially when you get to the cone of cold part or you can take too much damage.
Obviously, I don't' play mages normally so I don't have much in the terms of an arsenal.

My current iron mage is Enferrujo, at 46. My best effort was mage Enferruja, who died at 60 due to my carelessness.
Your strategy is close to mine, but there are a few changes that I would make.
First, you need to work fire blast in there. It's an instant spell, castable on the move, and it does significant damage. I tend to use it just as the mob is getting in my face, right before casting frost nova or cone of cold (and which of those I cast depends on if frost nova is on cooldown- obviously it the the preferred spell).
Second, arcane blast is a much better damage spell than fireball and it has a shorter cast time- as long as you have fewer than 2 arcane blast debuffs. Once you have 2, you should cleanse them with arcane missiles as soon as possible and start with arcane blast again, as long as you've made sure your target is slowed with frostbolt and/or cone of cold.
Fireball is a better use of mana as a damage dealing spell if you have 2 or more arcane blast debuffs, but I almost never use it anyway. You'll almost always have proc'd arcane missiles by then, and you should use it.
Once you get ice lance, it's even easier. After frost novaing and gaining distance, always follow your frostbolt up with an ice lance, backing up after casting ice lance to gain more distance until the GCD is back up.

I should note that I'm indebted to Moiaux (who, with a death at 64, is currently the highest ever iron mage) for giving me the basics of this strategy when I was starting out.

Thank you loopus. I did not know that arcane blast did more damage. I will switch that out immediately. I actually am using fire blast as you are I just forgot to mention it when I listed my rotation. Question, I now have ice lance and am wondering will that break the mob out of frost nova and if so, aside from saving mana why would you use it and not a heavy hitting spell?

Question, I now have ice lance and am wondering will that break the mob out of frost nova and if so, aside from saving mana why would you use it and not a heavy hitting spell? By the time you've gained distance and cast frostbolt, chances are that the root's time will expire before you can wind up another heavy-hitting spell, or that frostbolt will crit and break it by itself. Ice lance does double damage on a frozen target, but whether or not the target is considered frozen is decided at the moment you cast, and frostbolt has a travel time. Because of that, ice lance will do frozen-target damage when cast immediately after frostbolt even if frostbolt breaks the root. Ice lance on a frozen target is also heavy damage for a cheap spell, and mana issues are a recurring problem for the iron mage. For those reasons, I tend to prefer frostbolt-ice lance on a frost nova'd target, and I'm satisfied if that's all I get before it starts creeping towards me again.

Handy mage tip here. Never accidently Frost Nova a patrol of lvl 90 Kor'koran Grunts outside Ogrimmar. They don't give you a chance to explain it wasn't meant for them.

Has anyone got any tips for levelling an iron mage? This thread seems to have been dead for quite a while, so I thought I'd revive it and see if anyone else is levelling an Iron mage.
Been levelling Mahra, my female dwarf mage, for a bit now. Currently level 20 and noticing the mobs are starting to hit a bit harder. However, I haven't run into any trouble so far. Just avoid patrols and try to fight every mob one by one, then it's easily done with Frostfire Bolt, Frost Nova and Fire Blast. Also, I found it's good to equip a wand instead of a staff, since it allows you to use ranged attacks while kiting or while the mob is frost nova'd. The damage is low, but it's still damage you can do while out of melee range.
Anyone else levelling a mage and has some tips on where to go or what to do (next to the tips in Tanee's Guide and the 'Mobs & quests to avoid')? Thanks and good luck!
