Hi, I'm an 11-year WoW vet, with my original account. I have a lot of heirlooms, account-wide achievements, tons of battle pets, etc. How is it that you track stats on WoW characters, even though I've found no possible way for you to do so? I know you can look at the armory and see the gear that is equipped, but not how many potions or flasks, boss kills, groups joined, etc. As far as I know, only I can see that information on my stats panel.
Anyway, since I'm pretty bored with WoW right now, I thought I'd try this ironman challenge, but I have a few questions regarding the rules:
Guilds, now that guilds don't have levels, but still receive certain buffs, this is OK? Auction House, I didn't see any rules about the AH or sending gold/gear to Ironman characters. Buffs, only self-buffs? What if someone in town is just randomly dropping buffs on players, can I keep those, or do they have to be removed? (Again, how do you track these things?) Mounts? Quest rewards and green+ drops. Just sell these? This "Your Killing Blow / Total Kills percentage must be 50% or higher. Break this rule and your character is Yellow Flagged." what does that mean? If I'm questing by myself, won't my kill/killing blow rate be 100% since we can't be in a group anyway?
I really just need clarification on what we're supposed to do. This is my impression so far:
New character. Only use gray or white quality items. (No heirlooms) No potions, flasks, food with buffs, etc. No groups (completely solo play) Can only use first-aid and normal food to heal. Don't die. No spec, talents or glyphs.

Hi, and welcome! Re the stats, when you look at the achievements on the armory, there is a Statistics tab, which shows most of what's visible to you ingame (doesn't show gold-related stats, as that's a security risk), for example: eu.battle.net/wow/en/character/earthen-ring/Iarnaigxii/statistic . Make sure when ingame, that you check the box in the interface options to "Display Only Character Achievements to Others; it also affects what's shown on the armory. Guilds are fine, there's one or two who disagree with it as a couple of semi-useful buffs remain, but I just take the approach of not using my hearthstone more often than the non-guilded cooldown time (in a guild it's 15 mins, outside a guild it's 30), that makes it fair in my mind AH is not banned, opinions vary as to how "right" it is. I personally think that selling drops is ok if you want (I prefer not to but that's just me!), but it's entirely wrong that people can go there and buy gear that drops off mobs they can't kill yet. However, at one point early on, one of the first sets of rules did specifically allow both buying and selling on the AH. So plenty of people kit themselves out in a full set of greys they can't obtain normally yet (who's even selling that many greys? I never see them up at all on my servers, although I certainly hope that there's just a very thriving market in AH greys on other servers!) Sending gear/gold to ironmen characters is not allowed (the tracker site has lost that rule along the way but it was definitely in the earlier rules), and I'd put buying on the AH in the same category myself, but others don't, so just take the approach you prefer Buffs can't be tracked, it's down to personal honesty. If someone else buffs you, click it off (can wait till they've gone away if you don't want to look rude hehe), occasionally when you're doing quests that involve an NPC following you they won't stop buffing you, just accept it and click it off as soon as you get rid of the NPC - we need as many quests as we can get, so unavoidable buffs while completing a quest are fair enough! Mounts, regular mounts are fine, my preference is not to use "special" mounts which the character hasn't earned themselves though. The Chauffered Chopper to me should not be used, as it's only available via your main's work in collecting heirlooms, likewise with the water walking mounts and fishing. Both give a definite advantage, be it having a mount below lvl 20, or being able to move faster over water, so I won't use either. Draenor flying is a similar debate, albeit very few have even reached Draenor for it to be an issue; I personally won't use it (if I ever get that far!), but others feel it's acceptable. Personal choice on that one Killing blows: exactly, you'll be near 100% (slightly lower due to NPCs in some quests) - that rule is to filter out people who grouped anyway, and a particular levelling tactic which involved farming mobs being killed by NPCs. It's unavoidable to have a few mobs killed by NPCs, that's fine, but if loads are, then the tactic isn't particularly ironman Your basic impression seems about spot on, only addition I'd say is "and have fun" Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I gather that a character needs to be level 10 before we register it for the Ironman challenge, of course, abiding by the Ironman rules from 1-10. This is obviously because characters below level 10 won't show up on the armory.
Does it matter what server we play on? Also, faction?
I was also thinking about creating an Ironman Challenge guild on my server. What would the rules be for this? GV access, since grays and whites aren't soulbound, is it OK to share them with guildies, or must we find/buy them ourselves? Repair money?

That's right, yep, once your character is on the armory you can register it Server/faction, entirely your choice, although PVP servers aren't recommended for obvious reasons! A lot of us go for RP servers, due to less crowding in levelling zones, and Alliance is popular because of the Night Elf racial, but there's absolutely no reason why you can't do something different if you want For guilds, no bank access, since we shouldn't be sharing gear, and no repair money. I set up one on my server and it's basically a chat channel and easy way to see achievements pop up, that's about it - I locked access to everything that might be questionable ruleswise. There are already guilds on Earthen Ring EU and Wyrmrest Accord US if you want to join an existing one (not sure which continent you're on!), if you'd rather start a new guild, there'll likely be interest from people not on those servers

Welcome! Iarnaig nicely wrapped everything up. The buying of grey/white from AH is something we don't all agree on, some say it's ok, some say it's not. Personaly I think that it doesn't really matter, I leveled a toon to 78 without even vendoring nor buying anything, and my lvl 100 never bought anything from AH. If you decide buying from AH is ok for you (it can be tracked but since we don't really agree there is no rule enforced on the tracking site) then sometimes grey drops have been sent COD to some iron toon; Iarnaig is against the idea. I have done both sending and receiving, but stopped ages ago. If you do send things COD at least it should be a few times the vendor price We have a guild on Wyrmrest Accord, and like Iarnaig there is no access to guild bank, and no repair. Server and faction have no real impact, faction will only offer different quests. Some classes and race are easier than others, hunter is the easiest, and many like to have Shadow Meld from the night elf (saved my life numerous times on various toons ) Good luck and have fun!
