Interesting. This would definitely make crafting gear more relevant. Hm, I think I'd always choose to spend a life to pick an item. If I die, I could fall back on crafted gear. Though getting the mats will take some time...so, hm, actually, I like that. That would be a tough decision, especially at higher levels.

I think with the way professions are right now, the gear you can make that's at the same level of quest items, is not as good. I think you'd always end up, even with the 8 item rule in place and no crafting token requirement, never choosing a crafted item over a quest or BoE choice. They've changed the quest and dungeon items over the years, but they've not changed professions in the same way.
When I was testing the Dark Warrior challenge on the PTR, I saw white Plate items that I could make, and mistakenly thought they had fixed professions, after the change to new level 1 plate and mail. A lot of that challenge was based upon crafting your gear. Now I have to rework gearing, or add back the previous level 40 gear requirements just to accommodate outdated professions. This is the case with Blacksmithing. Now, while I haven't tested Leatherworking lately, according to Wowhead, there are low level Mail items that can be crafted. If that's the case, then it's just the Warriors and Paladins that hindered by the challenge.
Unfortunately, there's no quick way to balance crafted gear with quest / BoE drops in a challenge. Not without making a specific rule about maybe having to have a certain number of crafted items equipped at any given time.

Ah, okay, that's much easier to keep track of than what I was thinking.
On another note, with crafted gear, do you find you end up crafting gear? Or do you just kind of leave it to quest and dropped gear? I know with Blacksmithing there isn't really any pre 40 plate gear, or mail gear with strength. Do you tend to favor one gearing method over the other?

Okay, for clarification: If I find a Blue BoE item, I can equip it, but I have to destroy my other (currently equipped) BoE?
I like the 8 Soulbound items idea. This way you won't get into a situation where you possibly lose interest in leveling because you feel like you're not progressing your character through gear.

You may want to try Forge on the PTR. They changed the tradeskills somewhat. I know they made changes to Blacksmithing. There's now low level plate gear, material requirements have changed, and weapon augment stats have been increased. I've not tried any of the other professions, but I would assume they are similarly changed.
It might also be interesting to combine Scribe and Forge to make a naked variant with the best crafted weapon you can get. Not sure how viable that will be, but it's worth a shot. I think I'll try this out on the PTR.
Edit: It turns out that all the weapons in the new Blacksmithing require leather to make. As the PTR doesn't have a big AH, I'll need to create another character for the strict purpose of skinning to test out this character.
Edit 2: So...tradeskills haven't been changed. I was hopeful that Blacksmithing had been changed when I saw low level white quality plate gear. All the greens and blues are still mail with agility / intellect. Sad times.

That might work. The information about achievement dates is already pulled onto the website. You can click on the little wheel and get a character's information. But, like you said, no idea how much extra work that would be to setup.

It may get complicated to make sure someones gets Loremaster of Outlands between 60 and 70, Northrend between 70 and 80, etc
I was thinking comparing the dates between the achievements, but there's no way (that I know of) to track individual levels. So you wouldn't know for sure if someone did old world content at any level between 60 and 69. Hmm.

With zones scaling to 60 in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, it might be interesting to have a section for Loremaster. You'd have to stop XP at 60 to be sure not to out-level the zones and to keep them current. But I think it would be a nice challenge to get Loremaster of Eastern Kingdoms and Loremaster of Kalimdor on an Ironman when all the zones are at your level. It could be an extra side challenge like Speed to 60.
What do you think? Would it be possible to track?

A rogue with a 2H would be hilarious trying to sneak around. Although that might be interesting if a Rogue tank spec were ever introduced. They could give them more parry and dodge chance, poison abilities with leech, and smoke screens to reduce dmg.
I suppose a Worgen Rogue with fist weapons would be the closest to a feral druid fighting in a humanoid form.
Weirdly, Warrior's can use staves. There's an early quest in Kharanos that the only quest reward offered is a staff, and it's an upgrade.
It might be fun to cobble together a melee magic user. Maybe a Mage or Warlock with a 1H sword and only able to use instant cast spells?
Edit: Haha, wow, okay, so I tried out a Warlock. I was going to have him wield a 1H sword and only use instant cast spells. Problem is, him being a caster, he has absolutely no melee attack power. I couldn't use the staff because of the 1H sword stipulation, so I unequipped it and went to go hit a level 1 mob. Each hit only did 1 point of damage. I died trying to beat a level 1... I though, well, maybe I just got unlucky with the rng on the mob's hits, so I tried again. Let it be noted that if you attack a trogg in Coldridge Valley, he will chase you throughout the zone. As I had looped the zone 3 times, I decided to give in and equip my staff and fight back. Haha, nope, even with my staff equipped I only did 2 points of damage to the mob. I promptly died.

Yep, any crafted gear is allowed.
Actually, you'd be surprised, I don't really get lost that often. Knowing you don't have the map, it's kind of an automatic to pay more attention to where you're going. I've gotten turned around a couple times, but you end up learning the landscape a lot better.
Yes, making it so you have to equip a shield, does take away some of your abilities. That's part of what makes the combat so challenging. On my Arms Warrior, I currently have Charge, Victory Rush, and Execute. I'll be getting Colossus Smash. I'm doing Arms, and I'm not sure if Fury can equip a shield. They can duel wield 2 2H, so...maybe? I'll have to switch specs and see if it lets me. One of the challenges I based this on was from a while ago, so things maybe have changed. I might have to restrict it to only Arms, if they can't. Or possibly for Fury, only allowing 1 2H weapon to be equipped.
Edit: It seems like it might have to be restricted to Arms Warrior only. You can equip a 2H sword and shield as a Fury Warrior, but you also then can use all your abilities. Part of the challenge of this is that you don't have the full compliment of abilities. Going to check into other possible classes that could be added.
Edit 2: Added more classes. See original post.

Dark Warrior Challenge- Only Arms Warrior, Enhancement Shaman, or Retribution Paladin
- See below for class retrictions
- Can only equip: head, wrist, belt, pants, and boots
- No AH or vendor bought armor or weapons
- No green quality quest items or green quality found loot (Exception: shields)
- Allowed Professions: Blacksmithing, Mining, Leatherworking, Skinning, Tailoring, Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid
- Have to keep associated profession tools (i.e. mining pick, skinning knife, blacksmith's hammer, fishing pole, etc.)
- No minimap or world map can be used (I unbound M and got Classic Quest Log)
- No quest objectives shown
- All NPC names turned off
- Nameplates only shown in combat
- Vanilla mount restrictions and cost
- Have to have an item that represents your mount kept in your bags
Level | Skill | Cost | Cost (Exalted) | 40 | Apprentice (60%) | 100 Gold | 90 Gold | 60 | Journeyman (100%) | 1000 Gold | 900 Gold | 70 | Journeyman++ (100%) | 2000 Gold | n/a |
- Journeyman++ allows use of none faction mounts (Exception: No merchant mounts)
- No Flightpaths
- No flying mounts
- Only profession made buffs (food, sharpening stones, etc.), and health potions allowed
- No vendor bought food
- All food consumed has to be made by self, and has to be cooked (No raw fish or chunks of meat)
- 25% of all incoming gold has to be destroyed (I'm using Guild Tithe)
- Limited to 2 (single item or stack of items) on the AH at a time
- Death: Lose everything in your inventory - EVERYTHING
- Death: Pay 100% of durability cost (See: et.worldofwarcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Durability)
- Death: 50% of remaining gold after durability payment is destroyed
Class Restrictions: Warrior Shaman - 1H Mace and Shield
- No Lightning Bolt
- No Healing Surge
Paladin - 1H Sword and Shield
- No Flash of Light
- No Cleanse Toxins
- No Shield of Vengeance
I know this seems extreme in places, and maybe a little complicated, but it's actually really fun. Even on live, this is fun to play. Profession gear ends up actually being an upgrade. Having to search for ore without the minimap or map is really rewarding when you find a node. The stipulations on money makes it so that you have to work to afford to buy recipes and hard to find crafting materials. Without the map, you get to know a zone in a new way. Instead of constantly looking at your minimap or map to see where you are, you have to get your bearings and remember which path it was you took into that cave. Limiting equippable gear slots, makes fights seem like actual fights, and there's even a possiblity (on live) of possibly dying if you get two mobs on you. Let me know what you guys think! Edit: Added more classes

I had a thought, and I want to make a suggestion. I don't know how much work it would be to change the code for tracking, but you might be able to allow all green quality items of an iLvl of 1. All the cosmetic items have an iLvl of 1. Then you'd only have to add one exception, instead of for each individual item.

There are account wide quests, and that is why it shows you having already completed 28 quests (Pet quests count in this category). I believe those are accounted for in the tracking of the challenge.

I like the idea of creating your own Orc army. I watched some of your videos. Good on ya for immediately remaking your character when you lost the first. I'll keep checking back to see how you're doing. :]

I just tried some Northern Stranglethorn quests on my Orc Survival Hunter (who uses an iLvl 1 weapon and basically no gear). The orges kicked my butt. My pet died 4 times, and I died once. If I got two mobs, it was a really close fight or death. It reminds me a lot of what vanilla leveling used to be like. I really like the level scaling and stat squish. I actually got to use all my offensive abilities in a fight.
A potential problem: My hunter had originally had a low level staff equipped, but when I logged in it said something about due to spec changes weapons something er other. It automatically equipped a blue polearm. This could be a problem for continuing irons when 7.3.5 goes live.
